About
"Hands have a history of their own, they have, indeed, their own civilization, their special beauty; we concede to them the right to have their own development, their own wishes, feelings, moods and favorite occupations" - Rainer Maria Rilke
Ainsley Francis is a Canadian, Luxmbourg-based artist working in mosaic, engraving and kiln-cast glass.
After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelors degree in Philosophy and Political Science, she attended the Craft and Design program at Sheridan College until May 2010.
In her work she attempts to explore questions about tradition and cultural identity through the use of traditional craft practices such as engraving, kiln casting, and mosaic. She aims to create images that raise questions about the values we maintain as a culture, and the historically embedded nature of ethical thought.
"Self Portrait," (2010) engraved glass, print. After a drawing by Harcuba.
